5 reasons why the old HA design should return back

The first information about HA redesign being in progress is known for over a month. We all hoped that the HA team will work on it and made it perfect. Unfortunately, it is not what happened. This article presents five strong reasons why the old HA design should return back.

This article was originally published in Czech. Due to a lot of positive reactions I managed to translate it. Sorry for my English, I hope you will understand what I mean here :-)

Reason 1: Usability should be top priority

A lot of time int today’s modern website development is spent on developing great user interface that will be easy to use for everyone. No one likes waiting, searching and losing his time. The information has to be found immediately and has to be understandable or the visitor leaves. The old HA design was not perfect but it was easy to use and had relatively good UI. From the user’s point of view, the orientation there was fine and getting used to it was question of minutes. The new design is a great example how the UI should not look like. The most of page elements is placed illogically on the screen and they are not formatted well.

Reason 2: New design does not think of new managers

It is expectable that all experienced managers get used to the new design in few days. They know all HA functions and they also know where to find it. But what about the new managers that signed HA for the first time? They do not know anything and will be completely lost. The design does not help them and it discourages them. The number of new managers will fall down in coming days, weeks and months.

Reason 3: Community is the key for every online-game

Every online-game is based on strong community of players. It is necessary to give them enough fun, new functions and place to express themselves. This is not the case of Hockeyarena. The only unifying element here was well organized discussion that is now the opposite. Another thing are tournaments. A lot of them has poor quality. The reason is the difficulty of updating the match results, statistics and things connected to it. Ask yourself these questions: Why there is no function or API on HA that would allow to download match results remotely which could be used in all tournaments even by programmer beginner? Why these things that could make everything easy and support the community expansion are passed to lower priorities?

Reason 4: Redesign does not mean just the change of look

I think that hardly anybody found out that the new design uses at least 90% of the old design HTML code. Yes, the old code that consists tens or even hundreds of errors to HTML standard. It does not use the CSS styles properly and this all makes the sites a trash that people complain about. This is not how the redesign should look like.

Reason 5: Experiments should stay in Beta-version

I understand that Icko overshot the estimation when the new design will be released. It can happen and is OK. But it should not be a reason to release unfinished version with a lot of errors among people. This action can backfire and became the last piece that make people to leave Hockeyarena for ever.

What do you think this?

Did I forget something? Do you agree with me? Or disagree? Let me know about it in comments below this article. Thank you.

To fix the bugs and add new features and statistic even in the old design – This should be the priority!

I like „Reason 3“ in this article. Im running my own turnament and want to expand the number of users but can´t to do it without some support in downloading the match results.
